Chivas USA' Marcos Mondaini gave his team a 1-0 home win June 4 with a 70th-minute goal in the only previous meeting between the teams. Chivas USA' Laurent Courtois also scored his first MLS goal Saturday. The midfielder was acquired earlier this month after playing for the French club Grenoble from 2008-11. After recording just three goals in 22 matches for the Galaxy this season - his first after netting 61 in four years at New York - Angel scored Saturday in his Chivas debut, a 2-all draw at Colorado. Chivas USA completes its five-game road stretch Wednesday night when Portland tries to post back-to-back wins for the first time since early May.

Portland Timbers' Perlaze scored his sixth goal Saturday - one behind team leader Jack Jewsbury - and assisted on Chara’s first MLS goal, which came in the second minute for the fastest in team history. Portland Timbers which is three points out of the final playoff spot, will try to win consecutive games for the first time since April 30 and May 6. Continued goal scoring from Jorge Perlaze and midfielder Diego Chara could help the Timbers accomplish that as they also try to match a season high by earning points in four straight at home.

Aug 16, 2011

Tuesday, 10:05 pm EDT

New York Mets' Jonathan Niese was the hard-luck loser in Thursday’s 3-2 home loss to San Diego, yielding three runs - two earned - while fanning seven and matching his career high with 122 pitches over 7 2-3 innings. Jonathan is 5-0 with a 3.65 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 37 innings over his last six road starts. He is looking to extend his career-high road winning streak to six as he makes his first appearance at pitcher-friendly Petco. NY Mets split a four-game home set with the Padres last week, are now on the verge of winning their first series at San Diego since sweeping three games at Qualcomm Stadium from May 16-18, 2002.

San Diego Padres' Cameron Maybin homered on one of his two hits off Niese last week. He has a .348 average with three RBIs and six runs in five meetings with the Mets this year. San Diego Padres’ 23-37 home record is among the worst in baseball. They’ve lost four consecutive series at Petco. San Diego Padres' Cory Luebke has lost his last two starts at home, surrendering nine runs and 16 hits, including three homers, in 13 1-3 innings. He held New York to two runs and three hits in five innings Thursday, but walked a career-high four batters while hitting two others. He struck out eight but did not get a decision.

Tuesday, 10:10 pm EDT

Toronto Blue Jays' Jose Bautista’s lone hit in seven at-bats against Vargas was a homer. He’s also walked three times. Toronto Blue Jays' Brett Lawrie is hitting .343 since arriving in the majors Aug. 5, and his .743 slugging percentage during those 10 games ranks among the league leaders. Toronto Blue Jays lineup, meanwhile, has taken advantage of some opposing pitchers’ issues with location in its past three games, hitting eight homers and totaling 21 runs. Toronto Blue Jays' Brad Mills hasn’t quite excelled since arriving from the minors in late July.

Seattle Mariners' Jason Vargas gave up six hits, five runs and five walks over three innings in an 11-6 loss. He posted a 2.70 ERA in his first two career starts versus Toronto - lasting 6 2-3 innings both times - but he didn’t make it half that deep July 20 at Rogers Centre. Seattle Mariners had lost six straight times when the left-hander had taken the hill heading into his Wednesday outing against Texas, but Vargas - who had thrown six scoreless innings in his first August start - again stepped up. He held the high-powered Rangers to three runs over seven innings, shaking off a pair of homers in a 4-3 victory.
